THE STORY OF AMETHYST

Based in the heart of Dublin, Amethyst is an Irish owned and family run company. Amethyst as a company has a colourful history.

In the early eighties, Meghan and Barbara were selling jewellery “Molly Malone style” on Grafton Street. These street stalls were the spawning ground of Amethyst retail and wholesale. It was also where Mick Sawtell saw the potential in those first few samples of etched brass and nickel silver of Celtic Jewellery as presented to them by the late Michael Mc Carthy of Clonacraft Clonakiltly.

Amethyst at this time was at the forefront of the Celtic revival. Not long afterwards the first few Sterling Silver Celtic jewellery items came into being. These items can still be bought; you will recognise them from the very low numbers – see CB001, CR006, CNK002, designs that have lasted decades. At this time we traded from a garage in Dawson Street where Mags came to join us. Meanwhile Sue Mather and Mick were expanding into retail, where Karen at 14 years of age began her career. She started selling them home made hair scrunchies and before long was managing Celtic Spirit the shop.

For years we traded from 11 South William Street, the fashion and wholesale centre of Dublin at the time. Over many years this area became a trendy place for wining and dining.

On May 1st 2000, the wholesale and retail businesses began trading independently of each other. Barbara Ward and Mick Sawtell became partners in the wholesale side.

We moved to Trinity Enterprise Centre in 2004, very happily, it’s a great place to work. The Docklands is an area of Dublin that is thriving and changing every day. It is still the city centre without the confines, we have parking and lots of space.

2005 saw Mark Mc Kenna (Barbara’s husband) coming into the business and in 2006 Barbara and Mark bought Mick out. Mags, after a couple of career breaks is still working with Amethyst. Meghan had a few years living in Hawaii and two beautiful children later is back working with Amethyst. Karen also had a career break and had two great kids but rarely has missed a trade show. Anna has been working with Amethyst for many years, behind the scenes. Pat Smyth our popular Irish Agent has been with Amethyst over 10 years, travelling the 32 counties. Tony Headley covers the wilds of Scotland and has been with us as many years.

Karen, Mags, Meghan, Mark, Anna, Pat and Barbara – the core of the Amethyst Team have worked together for more years than we care to remember! A very tight and loyal crew an asset to any business, we have seen many changes to the trade – it never ceases to be a challenge and we like to think we have always risen to them
